Volvo: What's new for 2010

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

C30: (photo) Volvo's svelte coupe gets new front-end styling and host of new standard equipment, including Bluetooth phone connectivity, cruise control, a trip computer, adjustable head restraints, leather-and-aluminum gearshift knob, and a leather-wrapped handbrake. R-Design models also get fog lights. The Preferred Package adds a power driver's seat and keyless ignition, the Climate Package now includes automatic climate control, a cabin filter, and a humidity sensor, and the new Multimedia Package bundles the Dynaudio stereo with SIRIUS satellite radio.

C70: (photo) Styling changes originally scheduled for 2010 have apparently been put off for 2011. Options have been shuffled; keyless ignition and rear parking assist are now stand-alone options, while a cabin air filter is now included in the Climate package. A new Dynamic Package includes 18" wheels, headlights that turn with the steering wheel, and a 3-spoke "sport" steering wheel.

S40: Manual transmissions, which were dropped in 2009, have returned for 2010; the 2.4i can be had with a 5-speed stick, while the T50 AWD R-Design comes with a 6-speed. (A 5-speed automatic is optional; front-drive T5s are still automatic-only.) Automatic climate control and a leather-and-aluminum gearshift are now standard on the 2.4i, which also offers navigation as an option. The Preferred Package now includes a moonroof, power front passenger's seat, and keyless ignition, while the Climate Package adds a cabin filter and humidity sensor.

S80: Volvo's flagship gets a new grille and a bit more chrome on the outside, along with upgraded cabin trim on the inside. The 3.2 liter engine is now available in a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) version; it delivers slightly less horsepower (225 hp vs. 235 for the ULEV-compliant 3.2) and its automatic transmission has a revised shift program for better fuel economy, although the PZEV's EPA estimates are the same (18/27) as the ULEV version. The T6 AWD now offers a sport-tuned suspension, part of an optional Dynamic Package, and the rear-seat refrigerator (complete with two crystal glasses), formerly available only on the S80 V8, is now offered on all S80 models. Speaking of the V8, it now comes with speed-sensitive steering as standard, and a sport-tuned suspension is an option. The navigation system has been updated, and several previously-available features have been shuffled among the S80's five available option packages.

V50: Volvo's smallest wagon can once again be had with a manual transmission, though only in racy T5 AWD form; a 5-speed automatic remains standard on the 2.4i (and optional on the T5). Other changes are similar to the V50's sedan sibling, the S40: Standard climate control and leather-and-aluminum gearshift, optional navigation for the 2.4i model, and new equipment for the Preferred and Climate packages.

V70: The big wagon gets a new R-Design model for 2010; it includes 18" wheels, a sport-tuned chassis, tailgate spoiler, and unique trim inside and out. It's powered by the same 3.2 liter inline six as the base-model V70, although that engine is now available in a 225 hp PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) version as well as the 235 hp ULEV version in last year's car. All V70s get a new grille and silver roof rails, and the optional navigation system has been updated for ease of use.

XC60: (photo) The XC60 is Volvo's first small CUV. This sleek 5-seater is offered in two models, the X60 3.2 and the X60 T6 AWD. The former gets a 3.2 liter inline six in either 235 hp ULEV form or cleaner 225 hp PZEV form; both engines power the front wheels. The T60 is powered by a 281 hp turbocharged 3-liter inline six that drives all four wheels. As you'd expect from a Volvo, the XC60 is brimming with safety equipment, including the new City Safety system. At speeds below 19 MPH, City Safety will automatically hit the brakes to avoid (or lessen the severity of) a collision.

XC70: The 3.2 model now offers a PZEV version of the engine with 10 fewer horsepower (225) than the standard engine. The 3.2 also gets a new grille, more chrome trim, and the navigation system has been updated. The T6 AWD model gets a host of new standard features, including leather upholstery, power passenger seat, integrated child booster seats, and wood interior trim.

XC90: Volvo's largest SUV gets a long list of new standard equipment, including leather seats with power adjustment for both driver and passenger, a third-row seat, three-row climate control, moonroof, rear park assist, and an integrated center booster seat. The 3.2 R-Design adds a compass in the rear view mirror, while the V8 gets a wood-trimmed cabin, heated front seats, headlight washers, cabin filter, and rain-sensing wipers. The V8 R-Design model has been discontinued.

BEYOND 2010:

C30: The 2011 C30 will get an updated front fascia to further differentiate it from the S40.

C70: For 2011, the C70 will get a host of new standard equipment, including an automatic transmission, SIRIUS satellite radio, and Sovereign Hide leather upholstery. Volvo values the additional equipment at $4,000, but the C70's price will not increase -- in fact it will drop by $50, to $40,800.

Hyundai: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

ACCENT: All Accents boast improved fuel economy; EPA estimates are up 1 MPG across the board, to 28 MPG city/34 MPG highway for manuals and 27/36 for automatics. Automatic Accents get a fuel economy indicator with red, yellow and green lights. The new Accent Blue replaces the GS Base as the entry-level Accent. It has a lower suspension and revised gearing for its manual transmission, which raises its EPA estimates to 28/36. Unlike the old GS Base, the Blue offers air conditioning as an option. Other changes to the Accent include iPod USB ports and blue backlit gauges. GS models now offer antilock brakes as an option, and steering wheel audio controls are optional on the GLS sedan. The SE gets them as standard, along with a sunroof and cruise control.

AZERA:
The Limited model gets a power-adjustable steering column, power seat memory, and wood-grain steering wheel and door pulls as standard. The high-end Infinity stereo now comes bundled with navigation.

ELANTRA: Like the Accent, the 2010 Elantra offers a "Blue" edition that gets better fuel economy than the standard Elantra.

ELANTRA TOURING: Although the Elantra Touring was just introduced in 2009, the it is being split into two models for 2010, the GLS and the SE. The GLS, which will be priced about $1,300 below the '09 Elantra Touring, gets power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, CD player, and electronic stability control as standard; automatics also get cruise control. Roof rails, a telescoping steering column, trip computer, a height-adjustable driver's seat, cooled glovebox, retractable cargo cover, fog lights, sliding sun visors with illuminated mirrors, and a premium cloth interior will be offered as an optional Preferred Package. The Elantra Touring SE gets everything in the GLS Preferred Package plus a sunroof, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, 17" alloy wheels, and a B&M Racing sport shifter for manual models.

ENTOURAGE: Hyundai's minivan has been discontinued for 2010.

GENESIS COUPE: (photo) Hyundai's new sporty rear-wheel-drive coupe shares its name with the luxury Genesis sedan. The coupe features a choice of 210 or 306 horsepower engines and an excellent neutral handling balance, and aims to take on cars like the Nissan 370Z, Infiniti G37 Coupe and Mazda RX-8.

GENESIS SEDAN: Navigation is now standard on the V8-powered Genesis 4.6 and part of a new Premium Technology Package (bundled with a backup camera) on the 3.8 V6 model. New options include dynamic cruise control and an electronic parking brake, both included in the Technology Package.

SONATA: The optional V6 engine is no longer available in the base-model Sonata GLS.

TUCSON: (photo) Hyundai's all-new Tucson is over 3 inches longer than the old model, but weighs 61 lbs less. Power comes from a 176 horsepower 2.4 liter engine tied to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A more fuel-efficient "Blue" version follows for 2011 (see BEYOND 2010, below).

VERACRUZ
: The base-model GLS gets a pile of new formerly-optional equipment as standard, including a power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, fog lights, roof rack, automatic headlights, a backup warning system, and an air-conditioned glovebox. All-wheel-drive models also get heated seats as standard. The GLS will also add navigation and a premium stereo as options. Both GLS and Limited will be available in six new colors.

BEYOND 2010:

ACCENT: An all-new Accent is in the works; it may arrive in 2010 as a 2011 model.

ELANTRA: The new Elantra sedan could show up as soon as 2010 (as a 2011 model). Hyundai is also planning coupe and crossover spin-offs of the Elantra platform, though it has yet to be determined if these cars will be introduced under the Elantra nameplate.

SONATA
: (photo) An all-new Sonata arrives in Hyundai dealerships in early 2010 as a 2011 model; its shapely styling is a sharp contrast to the conservative styling of the previous generation. Base engine is a 198 horsepower direct-injected 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine; in place of a V6, Hyundai will add a turbocharged 2-liter engine later in the model run. A more fuel-efficient "Blue" version (also powered by the 2.4) will also follow.

TUCSON: Hyundai will introduce a version of the Tucson with a more fuel-efficient 2.0 liter engine, called the Tucson Blue.

EQUUS: The Equus ("eh-koos") is a high-end luxury sedan that Hyundai sells in its home market of South Korea. Hyundai recently released a new version of the Equus based on the Genesis Sedan, and will bring it to the United States in late 2010 as a 2011 model.

Toyota: What's new for 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

4RUNNER: (photo) The 4Runner is all-new for 2010. The fifth-generation 4Runner is taller, wider and longer than the vehicle it replaces, and it retains its body-on-frame construction for off-road ruggedness. In a return to its roots, the new 4Runner will offer a 4-cylinder engine (2.7 liters, 157 horsepower), though only on the basic SR5 4x2 model; most 4Runners will be powered by a 270 hp 4.0 liter V6. The V8 engine from last year's 4Runner has been dropped. Model offerings include SR5, Limited, and a new Trail model specially designed for off-road performance. The 4Runner Trail offers Crawl Control and Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, both of which, until now, were exclusive to Toyota's top-of-the-line off-roader, the Land Cruiser.

AVALON: Aside from a new color ("Sandy Beach Metallic"), the Avalon is unchanged.

CAMRY: (photo) The Camry has been restyled for 2010 with new head- and taillights, bumper, grille, and wheels. The four-cylinder engine is a new 2.5 liter unit that produces 169 hp, 21 more than last year; SE models get 179 hp. The new engine can be had with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The optional V6 is unchanged. New standard equipment includes electronic stability control and auto up/down windows on all four doors; new options include a USB input jack, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and keyless ignition.

CAMRY HYBRID: (photo) Like the regular Camry, the Hybrid gets a new grille, bumper, and taillights and four auto up/down windows. The gauge cluster has been revised, as has the seat cloth.

COROLLA
: Electronic stability control is now standard.

FJ CRUISER: The good news is that the FJ's engine gets variable valve timing and other improvements, and now produces 20 more horsepower (259) while using a bit less fuel. The bad news: It now requires premium gas. Other news: Army Green replaces Voodoo Blue and the windshield washer tank is bigger. There's also a new Special Edition model, painted "Sandstorm" (beige?), including the roof, with a blacked-out hood. The Special Edition gets a host of comfort and convenience features as well as a Cycloe air cleaner, differential lock with A-Trac, Bilstein shock absorbers, all-weather floor mats, and TRD beadlock-style wheels with BFG all-terrain tires.

HIGHLANDER/HIGHLANDER HYBRID: A moonroof is now optional on the 4-cylinder base model, while a backup camera is optional on the V6 base model. "Toyota" and "V6" badging have been removed from the tailgate.

LAND CRUISER: A tinted rear window, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a USB audio input jack are now standard, and the optional navigation system now includes XM NavTraffic. Rain-sensing wipers are now part of the Upgrade Package.

MATRIX: Electronic stability control now comes standard.

PRIUS
: The Prius is all-new for 2010, with revised interior styling, a roomier interior, and -- most importantly -- a cleaner, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient powertrain. A new Eco Mode helps the driver to get better fuel economy, while Power Mode makes the Prius respond more crisply to the throttle. The Prius is now available in four trim levels, and new options include a solar-powered ventilating fan that runs when the car is parked and the ability to run the air conditioning off the traction battery, allowing the driver to cool of the car before getting in.

RAV4: New options include a backup camera for the base model, a JBL stereo system for the Sport, and a cargo cover for both Base and Sport models. The Sport Apperance Package is now available on 4x2 4-cylinder RAV4s.

SEQUOIA: The 4.7 liter V8 has been replaced by a new 4.6 liter engine that cranks out more power while using less fuel. In some parts of the country, 5.7 liter 4x4 models will get E85 flex fuel capability as standard. New standard equipment includes driver and passenger knee airbags, daytime running lights, running boards, a moonroof, roof rack, rear spoiler, power driver's seat, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a towing package. Limited models add a rear-view-mirror backup camera, 20" wheels, and a power rear liftgate, and a navigation system is now available as an option. The Platinum model gets additional wood trim, a rear-seat entertainment system, and laser cruise control.

SIENNA: No changes. A redesigned Sienna is on the way for the 2011 model year.

TACOMA: No changes.

TUNDRA: The 4.7 liter V8 gives way to a new 4.6 liter unit which produces more power and gets better fuel economy. The taillights are new, and some models get a revised grille. New standard equipment includes knee airbags for the driver and front passenger and a power rear window for DoubleCab models; a rear-view-mirror backup camera, power folding towing mirrors, and two new stereos join the options list. A new base-model Work Truck includes vinyl seats, rubber floors, black exterior trim, and fewer comfort and convenience features. Meanwhile, the high end gets higher with a new Platinum Package, which comes with jazzier trim inside and out, heated and cooled leather seats, and special Platinum badging, including embroidered headrests.

VENZA: An iPod compatible USB port and Bluetooth phone connectivity are now standard.

YARIS: Electronic stability control now comes standard, as does a tachometer and a rear-window defogger. The 5-door version is now available with a manual transmission.

BEYOND 2010:

JOINT SUBARU/TOYOTA SPORTS CAR/FT-86: Toyota and Subaru are co-developing a rear-drive sports car, which is expected to debut in 2011 as a 2012 model. The car will reportedly be powered by a Subaru-sourced horizontally-opposed ("boxer") engine. Toyota showed a concept version of the new car at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, dubbed the FT-86 concept (photo).

Kia: What's new for 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

AMANTI: Discontinued.

FORTE: (photo) The Forte replaces the Spectra as Kia's compact sedan. The front-wheel-drive Kia Forte is available in LX, EX and SX trim levels; LX and EX are powered by a 156 horsepower 2-liter engine, while the Forte SX gets a 173 horsepower 2.4 liter engine with an available 6-speed manual transmission and a sport-tuned suspension. Standard features include an iPod-compatible USB input port, Bluetooth phone connectivity, antilock brakes and electronic stability control.

FORTE KOUP: (photo) Kia will offer a two-door version of the Forte called the Forte Koup. The Forte Koup is slightly shorter and lower than the Forte sedan, and will be available in EX and SX trims. Engine choices are identical to the sedan: 156 hp 2.0 for the EX, 173 hp 2.4 for the SX, with SX models getting a sport-tuned suspension.

OPTIMA
: SX models get push-button keyless ignition.

RIO: The smallest, cheapest Kia gets updated front-end styling for 2010; inside, there's a new steering wheel, metal-trimmed gauge cluster, and red-orange lighting. Base models no longer come with a stereo. SX models get jazzier trim, while LX and SX models get standard cruise control and Bluetooth speakerphone connectivity.

RONDO: A third-row seat now comes standard, as do side mirrors with integrated turn signals. All models get an EcoMinder light (which presumably lights up when you're driving economically). A backup camera is now part of the EX Premium Package, while the LX Plus Package adds a trip computer.

SEDONA
: Kia's minivan gets a few minor trim changes, along with a standard backup warning system for LX and EX models and a rear-view camera, which is optional on the LX and standard on the EX.

SOUL
: (photo) The all-new Soul is Kia's answer to the Scion xB, and the resemblance goes beyond the boxy body. Kia is offering the Soul with a wide range of customizable interior and exterior options. Engine choices include 1.6 and 2.0 liter four cylinder engines of 122 and 142 horsepower respectively, and prices start right around $14,000.

SPORTAGE: New standard equipment includes an 8-way adjustable driver's seat, illuminated visor mirror, and an EcoMinder light for automatic-equipped Sportages. The EX Luxury Package now includes a back-up assistance system.

BEYOND 2010:

SORENTO: (photo) A new Sorento will be introduced in 2010 as a 2011 model. The new Sorento abandons the old model's body-on-frame construction; it's now a unit-body CUV. Powertrain choices include a 172 hp 2.4 liter 4-cylinder and a 273 hp 3.5 liter V6, both coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The new Sorento is the first vehicle to be built in the United States, at Kia's new plant in West Point, Georgia.

Audi: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond


CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

A3: The 3.2 liter V6 has been dropped, but the A3 will now be offered with the two-liter turbodiesel engine found in the the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with 140 horsepower, 236 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed S-tronic (twin clutch) automatic transmission driving the front wheels. EPA fuel economy for the A3 TDI are 30 MPG in the city and 42 MPG on the highway. The gasoline-powered 2.0T model is now available with Quattro all-wheel-drive. All A3s get S-Line trim as standard, updated wheels, and optional wood trim, while the Premium Plus model adds Xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights.
A4: The A4 was all-new for 2009. For 2010, the 3.2 liter V6 has been dropped, leaving the turbocharged two-liter as the only engine choice. The 2010 A4 gets a few detail changes, including an updated navigation system, LED taillights for Premium Plus and Prestige models, new wheels for S-Line models, and some minor changes to option availability.

A5 CABRIOLET: (photo) The A5 Cabriolet is a new soft-top convertible version of the A5, which picks up where the A4 Cabrio left off. Powertrain choices include a 211 horsepower 2-liter turbo four with a continuously-variable automatic and front-wheel-drive or a 6-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive, or a 265 hp V6 with a 6-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive.

A5 COUPE: Now available in four-cylinder form, with the same 211 horsepower 2.0T engine found in the A4 Buyers can choose manual or automatic transmissions, and Quattro all-wheel-drive is standard. The V6 is no longer available with a manual transmission. The A5 will adapt the A4's trim lineup, with Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige models. Other changes include an upgraded navigation system and LED taillights for Premium Plus and Prestige models.

A6: The A6 3.2 gets a modified engine that actually displaces 3.2 liters. (The old 3.2 was really a 3.1.) Horsepower is up by 10 to 265, while torque is unchanged at 243 lb-ft. Two new Sport Packages include a lowered suspension, sport steering wheel, and choice of 18" all-season or 19" performance tires. The Cold Weather package now includes a heated steering wheel, and the A6 Premium Plus gets an updated navigation system.

A8: The 12-cylinder W12 engine has been discontinued, leaving only the 350 hp 4.2 liter V8, and interior color choices have been trimmed down to just black, tan or light beige. 19" wheels and LED daytime running lights now come standard. Short-wheelbase models get a trunk lid spoiler and optional carbon-fiber interior trim, while long-wheelbase A8s get ventilated massaging front seats.

Q5: The Q5 gets new wood trim options, new S-Line wheels, and an improved tire pressure monitoring system. The Prestige model gets a standard blind spot warning system and an optional Luxury package, which includes leather-trimmed armrests and dash top and ventilated seats, while the Bang & Olufsen stereo is now offered as a stand-alone option on the Q5 Premium Plus.

Q7: (photo) Audi's big SUV gets refreshed styling, with LED running lights up front, all-LED taillights out back, new bumpers and more chrome. Inside, the Q7 gets "premium cricket" leather (please tell me it's not made from real crickets!) and a new version of Audi's Multimedia Interface (MMI) and navigation system. Audi says the new nav system will respond to commands like "I'm hungry," "I need gas," and "I need coffee." (I want to know if it will respond to "Eew, I'm sitting on crickets!")

R8: The R8 gets an optional 5.2 liter V10 engine with direct fuel injection that produces 525 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. LED headlights come standard on the V10 and are optional on the V8, and new options include carbon-fiber body trim and illuminated door sills.

S4: (photo) After a one-year absence, the S4 returns as a 2010 model. In place of the old S4's 4.2 liter V8, the new S4 gets a 3-liter supercharged V6 with direct fuel injection. Compared to the old V8, the new V6 produces slightly less horsepower (333 hp vs. the V8's 340) but more torque (325 lb-ft compared to 302 lb-ft). In fact, the new V6 produces more torque than the RS4's 420 hp V8. Audi claims a 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds, 2/10ths faster than the current S4 and only one-third of a second behind the RS4. The bad news? The S4 is only be available as a sedan, not a wagon.

S5 CABRIOLET: (photo) This new soft-top convertible replaces the S4 Cabriolet. The S5 Cabriolet will be powered by the same 333 hp 3-liter supercharged V6 as the new-for-2010 S4, with a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed S-tronic (twin clutch) transmissions and Quattro all-wheel-drive. The S5 Cabrio features a new quattroSport rear differential that can dynamically shift power between the rear wheels.

S5 COUPE: The S5 Coupe will retain its 354 horsepower V8 for one more year, switching over to the new supercharged V6 in 2011.

S6: No changes.

S8: Discontinued.

TT: The V6 engine and front-wheel-drive option have been dropped; all TTs now get the 2.0T engine and Quattro all-wheel-drive. The TTS continues unchanged.

RUMORED:

DIESELS: Audi is considering adding diesels to several of its models, including a 3.0 liter TDI V6 for the A5, V8 and V12 diesels for the Q7 SUV, and a V12 diesel for the R8.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

ACCORD: The labeling on the climate control buttons has been updated to make them easier to use. EX models get rear-seat ventilation ducts, and Bluetooth is now standard on the EX-L.

ACCORD CROSSTOUR
: (photo) The Accord Crosstour is a new BMW X6-style fastback SUV similar in shape to the Acura ZDX. (Acura is a division of Honda.) Honda says the Crosstour offers a car-like driving experience with the all-weather performance of a CUV.

CIVIC: No changes.

CR-V: (photo) The CR-V gets a mid-cycle refresh with a new hood, front fascia, bumpers and alloy wheels. The 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine is up 14 hp to 180, and EPA fuel economy estimates rise by 1 MPG. Inside, the front-seat center armrests have been widened, the seat fabric is new, and a few details have been changed, including revised stereo controls. EX-L models now get automatic headlights and an iPod-compatible USB port, and the optional navigation system now includes Bluetooth phone connectivity.

ELEMENT: A new "Dog Friendly" package (photo), which includes a cargo-bay pet bed, rubber floor mats, rear seat cover, dog restraints for both the back seat and cargo bay, and a ramp for dogs who can't make the jump into the Element's cargo bay, will be available as a dealer-installed option on the Element EX starting in fall of 2009. The package is not model-year specific, so it may show up on 2009 as well as 2010 Elements.

FIT: Unchanged.

INSIGHT: (photo) Honda's new affordable hybrid is called the Insight. It features a 1.3 liter gasoline engine with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system, and a video-game-like dashboard designed to coach drivers into hypermiling.

ODYSSEY: No changes.

PILOT: The Pilot was all new for 2009, and is unchanged for 2010.

RIDGELINE: Honda's pickup is unchanged for 2010.

S2000
: Discontinued. A replacement S2000 was reportedly in the works, but has been cancelled as a cost-cutting measure. Sad. Very, very sad.

BEYOND 2010:

CR-Z: (photo) The CR-Z is a two-seat hybrid-powered sports car. The CR-Z will reportedly use a powertrain similar to that of the Insihgt, but with a slightly larger (1.5 liter) engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. The production CR-Z will be shown at the Detroit Auto Show; it's expected to go on sale in 2010 as a 2011 model.

Ford: What's coming in 2010

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

CROWN VICTORIA
: No changes, although the big sedan is only available to fleets, not individual buyers.

E-SERIES: Ford's full-size van is unchanged.

EDGE:
Ford has tweaked the Edge's powertrain and aerodynamics to increase fuel economy. Front-wheel-drive models now have EPA fuel economy estimates of 18 MPG city/25 highway, up 1 MPG on both cycles, while the all-wheel-drive version rises 1 MPG in the city and 2 on the highway to 17/23. A new Limited Interior Appearance Package includes Sienna leather with contrasting stitching, brushed-aluminum center stack trim, and Edge-logo floor mats.

ESCAPE/ESCAPE HYBRID: The side mirrors now include a small convex section in the corner, which shows vehicles in the blind spots. New options include an automatic-parking feature (I've tried it in the Flex, and it works like gangbusters) and Pull-Drift compensation, which uses the electric power steering to compensate for crosswinds and road camber. (I've also tried it in the Flex, and it also works like gangbusters.)

EXPEDITION: Trailer Sway Control, a function of the electronic stability control system, is now standard.

EXPLORER/EXPLORER SPORT TRAC:
Both get Trailer Sway Control as standard.

F-150: The Harley-Davidson edition (photo) returns, with a unique front fascia and 22" wheels. Also new: The F-150 SVT Raptor (photo) from Ford's Special Vehicles Team which Ford calls "the ultimate off-road performance truck." The Raptor has a new front suspension with a wider track and features Fox Racing Shox internal-bypass shock absorbers and 35" all-terrain tires on 17" wheels. The Raptor is 7" wider than a standard F-150 and features unique styling inside and out. The first Raptors will be powered by a 320 hp 5.4 liter V8, with a new 6.2 liter V8 to follow in February 2010. Last year's SFE model has been discontinued, but all F-150s with the 4.6 liter/3V engine now get the SFE's fuel-economy improvements, resulting in a 1 MPG bump in the EPA highway figure (to 21). Additionally, the 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine (as seen in the Taurus SHO) will make its way to the F-150 lineup during the 2010 calendar year.

F-SERIES SUPER DUTY: A spray-in bedliner is now available from the factory.

FLEX: The Flex adds Ford's new EcoBoost V6, a 3.5 liter engine with twin turbochargers and direct fuel injection. Despite developing 355 hp, the EcoBoost Flex's combined EPA figure of 18 MPG is only 1 MPG less than the standard 262 hp V6 engine.

FOCUS: The Focus gets a major safety boost with the addition of standard electronic stability control and antilock brakes. Remote keyless entry, power door locks, and the MyKey system are also standard. MyKey is essentially a road-going set of parental controls. When MyKey is activated on a given ignition key, the car's maximum speed is limited to 80 MPH, the traction control system cannot be deactivated, stereo volume is limited to 44%, and a speed-warning chime can be set to sound at 45, 55 or 65 MPH.

FUSION: (photo) The mid-size Fusion gets an extensive makeover, with updated (and much better looking) styling inside and out, a new 2.5 liter base engine, a revised 3-liter V6, and a new 263 horsepower 3.5 liter Fusion Sport model (photo). The long-awaited Fusion Hybrid (photo) has finally arrived; it uses an Atkinson-cycle version of the 2.5 liter engine, and its EPA fuel economy estimates are an astonishing 41 MPG city and 36 MPG highway -- considerably better than the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima hybrids.

MUSTANG: (photo) Like the Fusion, the Mustang gets a serious going-over for 2010. The styling has been updated and the options list has been brought into the 21st century, with features such as a navigation system, backup camera, and the SYNC system. The glass roof, introduced in 2009, returns for 2010. Engine and chassis updates mirror last year's Bullitt model; ride and handling are greatly improved and the GT's V8 is now up to 315 horsepower. A new V6 is on the way for 2011 -- see BEYOND 2010 on next page.

RANGER: Ford's compact pickup gets electronic stability control and side airbags as standard.

SHELBY GT500: (photo) Along with improvements found in the 2010 Mustang, the Shelby GT500 gets a power boost (up to 540 hp and 510 lb-ft, same as last year's GT500KR). The body has been modified from the stock Mustang to improve engine cooling and downforce. Revised transmission and final-drive gearing give better acceleration off-the-line with improved fuel economy on the highway. Like the standard Mustang, the GT500 will be available in both coupe and convertible versions.

TAURUS
: (photo) The restyled 2010 Taurus represents an entirely new direction for Ford's full-size sedan, not only in terms of styling but in terms of content. The new Taurus offers advanced technologies such as adaptive cruise control, a collision warning system, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, blind-spot and cross-traffic warning systems, and (of course) Ford SYNC. Pricing remains unchanged from 2009, with the base-model Taurus starting at $25,995.

TAURUS SHO: (photo) Ford is bringing back the high-performance SHO version of the all-new 2010 Ford Taurus. Whereas the original SHO of 1989 had a 220 horsepower 3-liter Yamaha V6 and a 5-speed manual transmission, the new SHO gets a 365 hp EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and all-wheel-drive. Standard equipment includes Microsoft SYNC and push-button keyless ignition, while the option list includes massaging front seats, a blind-spot warning system, adaptive cruise control, and an upgraded wheel and brake package.

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

AVENGER: No changes.

CALIBER: Dodge's compact hatch gets an updated interior with a new instrument panel, door panels with softer armrests, and a center console that provides more storage space. The 1.8 liter engine has been dropped, leaving just the 2.0 and the 2.4; the 2.0 is now available with a 5-speed manual transmission. All models get active front head restraints, and the SXT model now offers a Sport Appearance Package with 18" wheels and performance-tuned suspension and steering.

CALIBER SRT4
: Discontinued.

CHALLENGER: SE models now come with electronic stability control as standard, while R/Ts get automatic headlights, LED-lit cupholders, and door handle lights, as well as an optional Super Track Pack (20" wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Car tires, self-leveling shocks, larger rear anti-sway bar, 3.06 rear axle ratio, and a sport program for the electronic stability control system). The UConnect system now includes steering-wheel mounted controls. The Challenger SRT8 is available in a limited-edition Plum Crazy model, named for a purple paint color offered on Chrysler muscle cars of the early 70s. Along with purple paint, the Plum Crazy Challenger gets a purple seat-insert stripe and a serialized dash plaque.

CHARGER: Side curtain airbags are now standard. All Chargers get a body-color sill plate, and SEs models get a chrome grille with black inserts.

DAKOTA: The Dakota gets Arin springs and Tokico shock absorbers to improve ride and handling, as well as a few new paint colors.

GRAND CARAVAN: Dodge's venerable minivan gains a new optional Blind Spot Monitoring System, which sounds a chime and lights up an icon in the side mirror if the driver tries to change lanes when there's a car in the blind spot. Related is the Rear Cross Path system, similar to Ford's Cross Traffic Alert, which warns of approaching cars when the driver is backing out of a parking space. Other changes include active front head restraints for all models; standard three-zone climate control for the SE; and a slightly higher final-drive ratio for the 4.0 liter engine.

JOURNEY:
All models get active front head restraints, improved antilock brakes, an "ECO" light on the dash which indicates fuel-efficient driving, and an available "dark slate" monochrome interior. SE models now include remote keyless entry, the screen for the optional DVD player is larger, and the optional 3.5 liter V6's EPA highway mileage is up by 1 MPG.

NITRO:
The SLT model is replaced by the SXT. Entry-level (SE) models now include active head restraints, an "ECO" dash light to indicate efficient driving, six speakers, a standard air filtration system, heated mirrors, and stain-repellent seat fabric. The SXT adds body-color exterior trim, an auto-up passenger window, and an alarm; leather is optional. Other changes include new interior colors and a new paint color, Sandstone Metallic, which replaces metallic gray.

RAM 1500: Although the RAM 1500 was all-new for 2009, it sees several changes for the 2010 model year. The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR - maximum permissible weight of the truck, fuel, occupants, cargo and trailer) for long-wheelbase 5.7 liter models is up 3/4ths of a ton to 15,500 lbs. V6 models get a fuel-saver "ECO" light, while a deceleration fuel shut-off system is said to improve real-world fuel economy (EPA estimates are unchanged). New features include an iPod connector, active head restraints, and an improved tire pressure monitoring system; options include a trailer brake controller, 22" wheels on R/T models, and auto-dimming mirrors.

RAM 2500/3500
: The heavy-duty RAM gets a thorough going-over, including the addition -- finally! -- of a proper crew cab. The styling has been updated in the vein of the RAM 1500, but with a bigger, beefier look, while the interior gets better materials and more amenities. A re-tuned suspension provides a more comfortable ride. Engines are carryovers: The 5.7 liter HEMI V8 (all new last year) and the 6.7 liter Cummins turbodiesel. Fleet customers will be able to purchase a biodiesel-capable version of the Cummins engine that runs on B20 (20% bio diesel/80% petroleum diesel). Maximum GCWR is up to 25,400 lbs while maximum towing capacity is 18,500 lbs.

RAM 3500/4500/5500 CHASSIS CAB: No changes for 2010, but an extensive update is planned for 2011; see BEYOND 2010 section below.

SPRINTER: No changes. Mercedes-Benz, which designed and builds the Sprinter, reportedly plans to end its contract with Dodge and sell the van exclusively through Mercedes-Benz dealerships, with Mercedes rather than Dodge badging.

VIPER:
Aside from four new paint colors, the Viper is unchanged. 2010 will be the last year for the Viper.

BEYOND 2010:

AVENGER: The mid-size Avenger will get a thorough refresh for the 2011 model year, with a new interior, refreshed styling, and a new engine. Fuel economy, refinement and performance will also be addressed. An all-new Avenger, based on a Fiat platform, will debut in 2013.

CALIBER/NEW COMPACT SEDAN
: The Caliber will be discontinued in 2012, to be replaced by a compact sedan based on a Fiat platform.

CHALLENGER: A minor refresh is in the works for 2011.

CHARGER: An all-new Charger is coming in 2011. Details haven't been revealed just yet, but Dodge promises dramatic styling and a class-leading feature set.

DAKOTA: The current Dakota will get the axe after 2011. A unit-body replacement is under consideration, but not definite.

GRAND CARAVAN
: Dodge's minivan will get a thorough going-over for 2011, with facelifted exterior styling and a new interior, as well as improved refinement and fuel economy. The Grand Caravan will get a complete redesign in 2014.

JOURNEY: The 2011 Journey will get a new engine, improved interior, and a refreshed exterior.

NEW FULL-SIZE CUV:
Dodge will field a full-size 7-passenger crossover utility vehicle. The new CUV is expected in the 4th quarter of 2010 as a 2011 model.

NEW SPORTS CAR
: Chrysler is considering a Viper replacement for 2012. Rather than create a new platform, Chrysler's parent Fiat Group could use other resources already in the Fiat family -- in other words, Ferrari and Maserati.

Chevrolet: What's coming in 2010

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

AVALANCHE:
The stereo gets a USB port, and 4x4 models get a single-speed transfer case; last year's low-range transfer case is now an extra-cost option.

AVEO: Horsepower is up from 106 to 108, the manual transmission gets higher 4th and 5th gear ratios for better fuel economy, and 2LT models get a standard trunk spoiler. Also new: Wintergreen Metallic paint.

CAMARO: (photo) Chevrolet re-introduced its classic sports car for 2010, with a strong emphasis on bang-for-buck: The base-model Camaro offers a 300 horsepower direct-fuel-injected 3.6 liter V6 for around $23,000, while the Camaro SS comes with a Corvette-sourced 6.2 liter 426 horsepower V8 for $31,000.

COBALT: The sedan version of the hot-rod Cobalt SS is being discontinued after just one year of production. (I wonder if that will give it collector-car status?) The SS coupe lives on, and now gets a sunroof and performance computer as standard. LT models have a new MY LINK package that includes a stereo with USB input jack, Bluetooth, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, OnStar and 16" alloy wheels.

COLORADO: Side-curtain airbags are now standard, and the optional 5.3 liter V8 gets variable valve timing.

CORVETTE: All Corvettes get standard side airbags, revised interior console trim, and optional cross-flag embroidery on the seats. 'Vettes with manual transmissions get launch control (see CORVETTE ZR1, below) and convertibles get a Z06-style trunk spoiler. Z06 buyers can now choose any color in the standard Corvette palette, including Torch Red, which returns for 2010. The new Grand Sport edition (photo) replaces the Z51 handling package on the base-model (LS3) Corvette. The Grand Sport combines the 430 hp LS3 engine with specific wheels, tires, suspension tuning, wider fenders, and Z06-size brakes with functional brake cooling ducts. Manual transmission Grand Sports get unique gearing while automatics get a specific rear axle ratio, changes which boost 0-60 times by 0.2 seconds compared to the standard LS3.

CORVETTE ZR1: A new Performance Traction Management (PTM) system provides launch control; when the driver floors the accelerator and dumps the clutch, it modulates the engine's torque output for fast, consistent starts. PTM also manages engine power when the driver floors the accelerator when exiting a corner. Like lesser Corvettes, the ZR1 gets standard side airbags and available Torch Red paint, as well as optional Competition Gray wheels.

EQUNOX: (photo) The Equinox is all new for 2010, with an emphasis on sharp styling, a quieter ride, and better fuel economy. Power choices consist of a 2.4 liter direct fuel injected four-cylinder engine or an optional 3.0 liter V6, also with direct injection, and Chevy claims that both engines will run up to 500 miles between fill-ups. Features carried over from the old Equinox include a rear seat that slides 8 inches fore-and-aft, allowing owners to maximize rear-seat legroom or cargo space.

HHR: Early reports that the turbocharged HHR SS would get the axe for 2010 were, I am happy to say, wrong; the SS will be back for 2010. The HHR gets a few new paint colors and a new rear-view camera, but is otherwise unchanged.

IMPALA: The V8-powered Impala SS has been discontinued, leaving the 2.5 and 2.9 liter V6s as the sole engine choices.

MALIBU: The four-cylinder engine is now E85 flex-fuel capable, and mid-level LT models get the LTZ's six-speed automatic transmission as standard.

SILVERADO: All V8s (including the Silverado Hybrid) are now flex-fuel capable, and the 4.8 and 5.3 liter engines get variable valve timing. The 5.3 also gets a six-speed automatic and a revised rear axle ratio. All 1500 models get standard electronic stability control, seat-mounted side airbags, and side-curtain airbags. All stereos get a USB port and the backup camera is available on more models.

SUBURBAN: The 6-liter V8 is now flex-fuel capable. 4x4 models get a single-speed transfer case; a low-range transfer case is now an extra-cost option. Stereos gain a USB input port, and option packages have been revised.

TAHOE: The 5.3 liter V8 is now flex-fuel capable; other changes are similar to the SUBURBAN.

TRAILBLAZER: Discontinued.

TRAVERSE: Premium stereos get a USB input jack.

BEYOND 2010:

AVEO: After the Spark (see below) makes its debut in 2012, the Aveo will be reborn as a larger, sportier car, available as a 5-door hatchback or a 4-door sedan.

CAMARO: The long-awaited Camaro convertible is expected to arrive in 2011.

CAPRICE PPV: (photo) The good news: Chevy will field a rear-drive car (based on the same platform as the Pontiac G8) for 2011! The bad news: Unless you own a police department, you won't be able to buy one.

CRUZE
: (photo) The Cruze will arrive in North America in early 2010 as a 2011 model and will replace the Cobalt. Powertrain choices will include a 140 horsepower turbocharged 1.4 liter four-cylinder as well as a 138 horsepower non-turbo 1.8. A six-speed automatic will be among the transmission offerings.

MALIBU: The Malibu will be redesigned for 2012, with more aggressive styling and a flatter roofline that should ease rear-seat access.

ORLANDO: Originally slated as an HHR replacement, the 2011 Orlando has grown into a three-row CUV with wagon-like proportions, similar to Ford's Flex.

SPARK: Chevy's new small car, based on the Beat concept car, will go on sale in Europe in 2010 and should arrive in the US in 2011. It will be smaller and less expensive than the current Aveo.

VOLT: (photo) The Volt is expected to hit the road in 2010 as a 2011 model. The Volt uses a battery and an electric motor to drive the wheels. When the battery's 40-or-so-mile range runs out, a small gasoline engine will supply electricity to keep the car running. Primary charge for the battery comes from plugging the car in. A new EPA fuel economy test for range-extended EVs gives the Volt a city fuel economy rating of 230 -- that's two hundred thirty -- MPG.

Cadillac: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

CTS SEDAN: A 3-liter direct-injection V6 replaces the indirect-injected 3.6 as the base engine; output is 270 hp and 223 lb-ft, and the engine runs on regular fuel. The 304 hp 3.6 liter direct-injected V6 will continue to be offered as an option. New features include a cabin air filtration system, suede-covered steering wheel and shifter, and optional 19" polished aluminum wheels.

CTS SPORT WAGON:
(photo) Cadillac has announced a station wagon version of the CTS for 2010. Though slightly shorter than the CTS sedan, the CTS Sport Wagon offers 25 feet of cargo space, accessible through a power-operated liftgate. Like the CTS sedan, the CTS Sport Wagon offers several powertrain choices: 3.0 and 3.6 liter direct-injection V6s offering 270 and 304 hp respectively; rear- or all-wheel-drive; and three levels of suspension, ranging from cushy to sporty.

CTS-V SEDAN: The 556 hp terror returns for 2010, now with an optional wood trim interior package.

DTS: Aside from a couple of new paint colors, the DTS is unchanged for 2010.

ESCALADE: The 6.2 liter V8 now gets an Active Fuel Management system that can shut down four cylinders for increased fuel economy. New side thorax airbags and a revised inner door design provide improved side-impact protection. The clock from the Platinum Edition is now standard in all models, the parking brake release has been revised, and a new battery saver shuts off power when the battery runs low from extended accessory use. The Escalade Hybrid gets flex-fuel (E85) capability and a taller rear-axle ratio for better fuel economy.

SRX: Cadillac's small crossover has been redesigned for 2010. Power comes from a 3.0 liter direct-injected 3-liter V6 producing 265 horsepower, and the new SRX features a Haldex all-wheel-drive system that can transfer up to 100% of the power to the front or rear and an electronic limited-slip rear differential that can deliver up to 85% of rear axle power to one wheel, which Cadillac says improves both traction and handling.

STS: The STS gets two new paint colors, but no other changes.

STS-V: Sadly, the 469 hp supercharged hot-rod STS has been discontinued.

XLR/XLR-V: Cadillac's hardtop-convertible Corvette clone has been discontinued for 2010.

BEYOND 2010:

CTS COUPE: (photo) The long-awaited coupe joins the CTS lineup as a 2011 model. Powertrain choices will be similar to the CTS Sedan, and a V version will follow.

NEW SMALL COUPE/SEDAN: Cadillac will add a new entry-level luxury car that will be smaller and (presumably) less expensive than the CTS. The new car will employ rear-wheel-drive and will be available as both a coupe and a sedan, with styling similar to the CTS and STS.

NEW LARGE SEDAN: Cadillac will field a single new large car that will replace both the STS and the DTS. The styling model I saw had traditional lines similar to that of the DTS, although the sharply-raked rear window resembles other Cadillac cars. GM has not announced a driveline layout, although the new car is rumored to share its platform with the Buick LaCrosse, which uses a transverse engine and either front- or all-wheel-drive.

Buick: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

ENCLAVE: Premium stereos now include a USB port for media players. New options include 20" wheels and a backup camera with a screen in the rear view mirror. The optional navigation system now features real-time traffic reports via XM NavTraffic.

LACROSSE/ALLURE: (photo) Buick's mid-size sedan is all new, with bold styling intended to bring some much-needed attention to this oft-overlooked sedan. CX and CXL models will initially be powered by an all-new 255 horsepower 3.0 liter V6 with direct fuel injection coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission; later in the model year, the CX will get a 182 hp 2.4 liter four-cylinder direct-injected engine as standard. CX models utilize front-wheel-drive, while the CXL offers optional all-wheel-drive. The top-of-the-line CXS gets a 280 hp 3.6 liter direct-injected V6, 6-speed automatic and front-wheel-drive. Available features include adaptive headlights, a blind spot warning system, and a DVD entertainment system. Because the word "LaCrosse" has unsavory connotations in Quebec French, the car will once again be known as the Allure in Canada.

LUCERNE: The big Buick rolls into 2010 with minor changes. The fog lights and rocker panels from last year's Super are now standard across the board, there are some new paint choices (and a few old colors stricken from the lineup), and the Super gets new optional 18" chrome wheels. Inside, the base model (Lucerne CX) now offers optional Bluetooth, the mid-line CXL gets new interior colors, and all models get a backlit instrument cluster.

BEYOND 2010:

LUCERNE: The Lucerne will be discontinued some time in the next two years, leaving the LaCrosse as the flagship car.

NEW COMPACT SEDAN: Buick will launch a compact sedan based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Cruze.

NEW CROSSOVERS: Buick has cancelled its plan to add a compact crossover SUV based on the same platform as the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, but they are still working on a smaller subcompact SUV.

REGAL: (photo) The 2011 Buick Regal is a rebadged version of GM's European-market Opel Insignia. Buick's new mid-size sedan will offer a choice of direct-injected four-cylinder engines, a 182 hp 2.4 liter unit and a 220 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter unit. Both will get 6-speed automatic transmissions, and the turbo will be available with a 6-speed manual

BMW: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

1-SERIES: HD radio is now standard, and automatic high beams are an option. The 128i Coupe loses its standard sunroof; it's now a $1,050 option.

3-SERIES: The standard stereo now includes HD radio, and automatic high beams have been added to the options list. The 328i and 328ix sedans, wagons and convertibles get new wheels, while the 328i/ix coupe and sedan no longer get a sunroof as standard.

5-SERIES: A new hatchback version of the 5-series (photo), called the Gran Turismo (GT for short), will be introduced towards the end of 2009 as a 2010 model. Sedans and wagons get a new version of the iDrive dial controller as well as an available M Sport package, which adds unique interior and exterior trim including an aerodynamic body kit, M-series wheels, a unique steering wheel, and an optional Sport Automatic transmission, which is programmed for crisper shifts and offers steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles.

6-SERIES: The navigation system has been upgraded and BMW Individual customization options have been expanded.

7-SERIES: Three new models join the 7-series lineup: The all-wheel-drive 750i xDrive, the V12-powered 760i, and the ActiveHybrid 7, all available in standard or long-wheelbase (750Li/760Li) versions. The 760 gets an all-new 6-liter V12 engine with twin turbochargers and direct fuel injection. Output is 544 horsepower, and peak torque -- all 553 lb-ft of it -- is delivered from 1,500 all the way up to 5,000 RPM. The 760 will play host to BMW's first 8-speed automatic transmission and will get all the comfort and convenience features in BMW's arsenal, including air suspension, four-zone climate control, night vision and adaptive cruise control that can start and stop as needed in heavy traffic. The ActiveHybrid 7 (]photo) uses the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 with auto-stop functionality and a lithium-ion battery. BMW says the ActiveHybrid 7 will accelerate to 60 in 4.8 seconds, making it one of the fastest hybrids in the world. BMW will offer an M-Sport Package for all non-hybrid 7s, which includes 19" wheels with performance tires (20" optional), unique interior and body trim, and an Active Roll Stabilization system for rear-drive models.

M3: HD radio now comes standard and automatic high beams are optional.

M5: Aside from the latest version of the iDrive controller, the M5 is unchanged.

M6: The M6 gets the new iDrive controller, but is otherwise unchanged.

X3: The moonroof moves from the standard-equipment list to the options list, and HD radio is now standard.

X5: (photo) The X5 SUV -- sorry, SAV -- gets a new "M" version with a 555 horsepower twin-turbo V8, stiffer suspension, and racy body trim. Changes for other X5 models include a new iDrive controller, upgraded navigation system with high-res screen and 80 GB music server, standard HD radio, optional automatic high beams, and a "Top View" feature for the backup camera.

X6: Two new versions of the X6 will be offered: The 555 horsepower X6 M (photo) and the X6 ActiveHybrid. The ActiveHybrid will combine a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor; peak combined power output is 480 hp and 575 lb0ft of torque. The hybrid X6 will be able to run in electric-only mode up to 37 MPG. All X6 models will get HD radio, a power-operated tailgate, a new iDrive controller and an updated navigation system as standard. The rear view camera gets a "Top View" feature, and automatic high-beams are now optional.

Z4: HD radio is now standard and automatic high beams are optional.

RUMORED:

FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINES: BMW hasn't sold a 4-cylinder car in the US since they axed the slow-selling 318ti in 1999. But higher CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards have BMW considering four-cylinder engines for the 1-series, 3-series, X1 and X3. BMW is reportedly working on a high-tech direct-injection four-cylinder engine that produces more power than the normally-aspirated inline six in the 128i and 328i. The problem? The new engine could cost more than the current inline six, and BMW isn't sure American buyers will be willing to pay a premium for two fewer cylinders.

Bentley Cars: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

ARNAGE: Discontinued, replaced by the Mulsanne.

BROOKLANDS: No changes.

CONTINENTAL GT: Now available with two-tone paint. A new "Series 51" model (also available in the Continental GTC convertible) features a three-tone interior with unique materials, 20" 14-spoke wheels, and special badging on the front fenders... er, sorry, wings.

CONTINENTAL GTC: (photo) The convertible Continental gets a revised grille, chrome trim around the headlights, and a couple of new paint colors. The power steering system has been revised for better feel, and the standard GTC gets softer shocks for a smoother ride. The new Continental GTC Speed is essentially a drop-top version of the GT Speed coupe. It gets a W12 engine that produces 600 hp, 48 more than the standard GTC. Top speed is 200 MPH (but only 195 with the top down). Both models now offer carbon-ceramic brakes and adaptive cruise control as options. The GTC is also available in a "Series 51" model (see CONTINENTAL GT, above).

CONTINENTAL SUPERSPORTS: (photo) Bentley bills the new Continental Supersports coupe as the fastest, most powerful Bentley ever built, with a 621 horsepower twin-turbo W12 engine, 3.9 second 0-60 time and a 204 mph top speed. All this, plus it's about 240 lbs lighter than the Continental GT Speed and has E85 flex-fuel capability.

MULSANNE: (photo) The new Mulsanne replaces the Arnage as Bentley's flagship. The Mulsanne is powered by a 505 horsepower twin-turbo V8 with variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Designed and built in the UK, the Mulsanne goes on sale in the home market in summer 2010, priced at £220,000 -- just over $350,000.

Volkswagen: What's new for 2010 -- and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

CC: The CC's trunk lid now carries "CC", "4Motion" and engine-size badges on its formerly-unadorned trunk lid. A six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox replaces the traditional automatic on 2.0T models. Bluetooth phone connectivity is now standard, but the 2.0T model loses its heated side mirrors. An iPod connector is now available as a stand-alone option, although it will also be bundled with the navigation system.

EOS: New standard equipment includes Bluetooth, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and a revised instrument cluster, and the iPod connector is now a stand-alone option. The Lux model gets a chrome grille (to differentiate it from the Eos Comfort) plus an optional sport-tuned suspension with 18" wheels.

GOLF: (photo) The all-new Golf, launched in Europe in 2009, comes to the US for 2010. Styling and interior are all-new, although the 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine is a carryover. Volkswagen will re-introduce the Golf TDI with the same 140 hp 2-liter turbodiesel engine as the 2009 Jetta TDI.

GTI: (photo) Like the Golf on which it is based, the 2010 GTI is all new. Power comes from the familiar 200 hp 2-liter turbo four-cylinder (ain't nothin' wrong with that!), available with either a 6-speed manual or the Direct Shift Gearbox, VW's 6-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission. A new electronic limited-slip differential is standard. The GTI will be offered in both two- and four-door versions.

JETTA SEDAN: The Jetta gets new interior and exterior colors as well as a new instrument cluster and revised A/C controls. Bluetooth is now standard in SE and SEL trim levels and optional on the S. The iPod interface is available separately from the navigation system. The TDI is now offered in a single trim level, but Volkswagen will also offer a new model called the Jetta TDI Cup edition, which will combine the TDI engine with the sport-tuned suspension, brakes and body kit of the Jetta GLI. If the Jetta TDI Cup does well, VW may consider more diesel-powered sports cars for the North American market. A new Jetta is due in 2010 as a 2011 model.

JETTA SPORTWAGEN: (photo) The Jetta wagon gets the front end of the new Golf. North America is the only market where this car is sold as a Jetta; elsewhere it's sold and styled as the Golf Variant or Estate. It will continue to called the Jetta here, but using the Golf front clip will cut down production costs. The car behind the new face is unchanged from the 2009 Jetta SportWagen.

NEW BEETLE: The New Beetle gets new colors for the exterior (Tossau Blau) and interior (white), and convertibles gain a standard boot cover. A new New Beetle is in the works; see BEYOND 2010 below.

PASSAT: Automatic Passats now get the 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox transmission. All Passats get Bluetooth and a CC-style leather steering wheel with audio controls as standard, while wagons get fog lights (the sedan already has 'em). Rear and side sunshades have been eliminated, and an iPod connector is now available separately from the optional navigation system. Cobalt Blue has been eliminated, which means the Passat is now only available in black, white, brown, silver or grey.

ROUTAN:
Volkswagen is trying out a Honda-like model lineup on the 2010 Routan. Instead of standalone options, the Routan now comes in 4 take-it-or-leave-it models: S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium. The SE will be available with or without rear seat entertainment (RSE) and navigation, and the SEL can be had with or without RSE. All models get more standard equipment: The S gains three-zone climate control; the SE gets faux leather, heated front seats, adjustable pedals, and Bluetooth; the SEL adds a sunroof, towing prep package, remote start, and a power 3rd-row seat; and the SEL Premium gets a towing prep package.

TIGUAN: The Tiguan gets a new instrument cluster, and all Tigs except the base-model Tiguan S get standard Bluetooth phone connectivity.

TOUAREG:
The V8 has been dropped, leaving just the V6s (gas and diesel). Also gone for 2010: Air suspension, rear differential lock, and the Safety Package (which included dynamic cruise control and a blind spot warning system). But while VW taketh away, they also giveth: Bluetooth and walnut wood trim are now standard, and the Luxury, Technology and Premium Technology packages get more equipment. Volkswagen is expected to add a hybrid version of the Touareg in 2010, although it may be badged as a 2011 model.

BEYOND 2010:

JETTA: VW will introduce a new Jetta next year, presumably as a 2011 model. The new car is being designed specifically for North America, and will be slightly larger than the current Jetta. It will also be less expensive, although VW says the needed cost savings will come not from cheapening the car but from economies of scale (the vehicle will also be sold in China and Russia, markets that, like America, prefer sedans over hatchbacks) as well as more use of local suppliers.

NEW BEETLE: A new New Beetle will arrive in 2011, most likely as a 2012 model. Expect coupe and convertible body styles with more powertrain choices than the single engine offered now, as well as more customization options (think Scion and MINI). VW sees the New Beetle as a missed opportunity and plans to build on the Beetle's popularity in the US.

NEW MID-SIZE SEDAN: VW will introduce a new mid-size sedan aimed at the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The new car will be larger and less expensive than the current Passat, and will be built at VW's new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Powertrain choices will include VW's 2.5 liter 5-cylinder and 2.0T 4-cylinder gasoline engines as well as a TDI diesel powerplant. The car will be introduced in late summer/early fall of 2011 as a 2012 model.

ABOUT THE 2009/2010 LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW

Three years ago, organizers moved the Los Angeles auto show to the end of the year, in order to position it ahead of the shows in New York, Chicago and (most importantly) Detroit. The ploy worked, as Last year's LA show attracted a large number of important vehicle introductions. The economic downturn has made this a quieter show than last year's, but there were still several notable introductions and several interesting concept vehicles making their first appearances in the United States.

WHEN TO GO

The Los Angeles Auto Show is open to the public Friday, December 4th through Sunday, December 13th, 2009.

WHAT TO SEE

SOUTH HALL
The LA show's biggest room has lots of good stuff, including Hyundai's gorgeous new Sonata and Tucson and the potentially controversial 2011 Buick Regal. Audi's brightly-lit booth deserves a visit, although the convertible R8 Spyder will probably draw huge crowds.

WEST HALL
Ford has a huge display with a nifty split-open Taurus and several hands-on displays relating to the Fiesta that are sure to be a hit with the kids. Ford will also be giving ride-along demos of their self-parking system. If you've never seen a car park itself, you'll want to check this out -- it's downright trippy. On the opposite side of the hall, tucked into a corner of Chrysler's massive display, there's a collection of six Vipers, worth seeing if you're into that sort of thing.

PETREE HALL
Don't miss Porsche's display, which once again takes up all of the diminutive Petree Hall, just across the hallway from the West Hall Lincoln/Mercury display.

CONCOURSE HALL
Ferrari's usual triangle display is gone, as are several of the other exotic automakers, but Spyker, Rolls-Royce, and Aston-Martin are back, and the rest of the hall has been taken up by Morgan/Allard, Fisker, Steve Saleen's SMS supercars, and Lotus, which has an Evora on display..

Chrysler cars: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond


CONFIRMED FOR 2010:
300: All models get side curtain airbags. The 300 Limited gets extra chrome trim and heated mirrors as standard, while the 300C gains keyless ignition and a rear parking assist system. A 300 Sport Edition will be added to the lineup during calendar year 2010.
ASPEN: Discontinued.
PT CRUISER: 2010 will be the last year for the PT Cruiser. The initial plan was to trim the PT lineup down to a single model, the PT Cruiser Classic. The Classic is powered by the base 150 hp 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic; the turbocharged engine and manual transmission have both been dropped. Chrysler has since decided to commemorate the PT's demise by adding a PT Cruiser Final Edition later in the year.
SEBRING SEDAN/CONVERTIBLE: (photo) The Sebring's famous hood grooves are gone, and the wheel designs are new. Inside, the Sebring gets a new instrument panel and active head restraints. Chrysler will introduce the Sebring Ocean Edition later in the year, which, according to Chrysler, will target buyers in coastal states. (Huh?)
TOWN & COUNTRY: All models get active head restraints for the front seats and a rear obstacle monitoring system, which encompasses a blind-spot warning system for changing lanes and an oncoming traffic alert when backing out of parking spaces. Limited models get a taller final-drive ratio, which could lead to a marginal increase in fuel economy, although EPA estimates are unchanged. A new Fashion Edition is in the works for the first quarter of 2010, but details have not been announced.
BEYOND 2010:
300: An all-new 300, based on a Chrysler-designed platform, will debut in late 2010 as a 2011 model.
NEW COMPACT SEDAN: Chrysler will field an all-new compact sedan, based on a Fiat platform, in 2012.
NEW MIDSIZE CROSSOVER: 2013 will see the introduction of a new mid-size crossover SUV built on a Fiat platform.
NEW SUBCOMPACT HATCHBACK: Chrysler will get a new "B-segment" car in 2013, which will be built overseas by Fiat. My best guess is that it will be a rebadged version of the next-generation Fiat Grande Punto.
SEBRING: The mid-size Sebring is going on a a crash redesign program; the updated Sebring will appear at the end of 2010, presumably as a 2011 model. An all-new Sebring, based on a Fiat platform, is coming in 2013.
TOWN & COUNTRY: Chrysler's minivan will undergo a heavy-duty refresh for the 2011 model year. An all-new Town & Country will appear in 2014; the new van will be designed in-house on a Chrysler platform

Nissan: What's coming in 2010 -- and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:
370Z COUPE: Nissan will produce a 40th Anniversary Edition to celebrate the American introduction of the 240Z (which went on sale in October 1969 as a 1970 model). The 40th Anniversary Edition is a 370Z Touring with a manual transmission and Sport Package. It comes with dark silver ("40th Quartz") paint and a red interior. The Anniversary Z gets unique badging inside and out, a dash plaque, and a satin car cover. Look for it at your Nissan dealer beginning in the spring of 2010.
370Z ROADSTER:The convertible version of the 370Z makes its debut for 2010. The 370Z Roadster (photo) features an electrically-operated soft top with one-button operation (i.e. no knuckle-busting latches to open). Like the 370Z coupe, the 370Z Roadster is available in two trim levels, Base and Touring, the latter adding heated and cooled leather seats, Bluetooth, and a Bose stereo. Touring models offer an optional navigation system and a Sport package with 19" RAYS wheels, improved brakes, limited-slip differential, and a rev-matching feature for manual-transmission cars.

ALTIMA: (photo) The Altima gets a mid-cycle refresh for 2010. Front styling has been subtly updated, while interior materials have been improved. The manual transmission is gone, and the V6 is now only available in a single model called the 3.5 SR. Most importantly, electronic stability control is now standard in all Altima models.

ARMADA: The top-of-the-line LE model has been dropped, replaced by two models: The Titanium Edition (which adds leather seats, keyless ignition, Bluetooth, backup camera, Bose stereo, power-folding 3rd row seat and self-leveling rear air suspension) and the Platinum Edition (all Titanium equipment plus heated front seats and steering wheel, sunroof, power tailgate, rear-seat DVD player, and navigation). Nissan says the 2010 Armada Titanium Edition -- priced at $42,920 for the 4x2 and $45,720 for the 4x4 -- costs $2,500 less than a comparably-equipped '09 Armada, while the Platinum ($50,170 for 4x2, $52,970 for 4x4) costs $1,100 less than a similar '09 Armada.
FRONTIER: Side and side-curtain airbags are now standard, and V6-powered Frontiers get electronic stability control as standard. SE and LE 4WD automatics get hill-start assist and hill descent control, while all SE and LE V6 models get an Active Brake Limited Slip system.
GT-R: Now in its second year, Nissan's all-wheel-drive supercar gets a round of improvements. The engine has been bumped by 5 horsepower to 485, the twin-clutch automatic transmission has been recalibrated for better performance (and elimination of the transmission-eating launch mode), the brakes now have rigid fluid lines, and the suspension gets Bilstien shock absorbers and recalibrated spring rates that provide a more compliant ride at slower speeds as well as when the car is in "R" (sport) mode. Seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags are now standard in all GT-Rs, not just the pricier GT-R Premium model. Base models feature a "smoke" wheel treatment while the Premium gets black wheels. Silver cars get a polished front bumper, and the GT-R is now available in white.

LEAF: (photo) The Leaf is an all-electric vehicle that will go on sale in the US in late 2010. The Leaf is a 5-passenger subcompact with a 100 mile range powered by a 107 horsepower electric motor feeding off a Nissan-designed lithium-ion battery pack. Charge time is 4 hours from a 220 volt home charger, and public quick-charge stations running at 480 volts will be able to juice the car up to 80% capacity in 26 minutes. I got a chance to sample the powertrain in a Cube test mule; it’s quick and unusually quiet, even for an electric vehicle. The Leaf EV will initially be sold to fleets and commercial entities, with retail sales starting in select regions as the public charging infrastructure becomes available.

MAXIMA: The Maxima gets new wheel finishes and standard Bluetooth phone connectivity; SV models gain XM satellite radio as standard. Option packages have been shuffled around a bit, and the navigation system has been upgraded to include DVD playback capability, Bluetooth audio streaming, and XM weather and traffic information.
PATHFINDER: The LE V6 gets a standard sunroof, while the LE V8 gains standard navigation. New option packages include the LE V8 Value Package (rear-seat DVD player and moonroof) and SE Premium Journey Package (17" wheels, backup camera, roof-rack crossbars, Bose stereo with XM satellite radio, Bluetooth and keyless ignition).
QUEST: Discontinued... for now. (See BEYOND 2010 on next page.)
ROGUE: The Rogue S offers a new 360° Value Package, which includes 16" alloy wheels, tinted windows, backup camera, auto-dimming rear view mirror, a rear spoiler and a chrome grille. A new Krōm model (photo) gets a unique grille, unique rear fascia with center-exit exhaust, and special 17-inch wheels.
SENTRA: The Sentra gets a minor facelift for 2010 (photo). All models get new head- and taillights and interior fabrics, and the 2.0, 2.0 S and 2.0 SL get a new grille and front fascia. The SL model gets a standard color display and electronic stability control, but loses its standard leather upholstery (it's now a $700 option); it's also priced $1,100 lower than last year's SL. The hot-rod SE-R and SE-R Spec V get the new head/taillights, interior revisions, and revised option packages, as well as lower prices ($1,080 less than 2009).
TITAN: Electronic stability control, side and side curtain airbags, and Active Brake Limited Slip are now standard, and the option packages have been shuffled around a bit.
UNNAMED COMMERCIAL VEHICLE: Nissan plans to sell a line of commercial vehicles in the States, and the first is due in 2010. Nissan hasn't said which one it will be, but we expect a small van, similar in size or slightly larger than Ford's Transit Connect.
